Baby Names Thursday - Old English Emphasis

Welcome to week three of Baby Names Thursday

Baby Naming Tip of the Week

A baby name may sound cute while your child is small, but one thing to consider is how the child will feel as an adult with that name. Can you picture your son/daughter meeting a future employer with that name? Cutesy baby names are fun and i'll admit adorable, but think about the your child's lifelong picture.  Will this name suit an adult?

Most of these featured names will fit for both babies and adults. This week I feel in love with many of Old English names, but some are still growing on me.  Most of the names make me feel like I'm in a romance novel. ;) Really though what pretty names.  Hope you enjoy the names of the week.

The #1 Scripture Challenge for Families

Free bible printable

Have you ever wondered how to involve your entire family in scripture study? Between breakfast, school, work, tennis, chores, lunch, taking care of the baby, groceries and making dinner I constantly find myself wondering "when is there supposed to be time for scripture study?!" To those of you who have a set time and stick to the scripture study schedule everyday ...hats off to you! I hope to have that habit established with my family soon.

As you can probably tell scripture study improvement has been on my mind lately. Why? When I read the scriptures my heart is engulfed with the love of Christ. Every verse serves as a reminder that I am a daughter of God

During my personal scripture study this past week I had a glimpse back to my childhood. My Mother loved writing our "weekly" scripture on a piece of paper then taping the verse to the wall. Every morning/evening my mother diligently had all of my siblings and myself recite the "weekly" scripture. After she would ask follow up questions about what the verse meant to each child. Now don't get me wrong my family was not perfect. On a couple of occasions I and my siblings would resist the family scripture time. Now looking back I feel terrible. Oh gollie bum. However, as I grew into the teen years my Mother's constant love of God helped me want to grow closer to God.  My Mother and Father were teaching me a valuable lesson: studying and memorizing the scriptures brings us closer to Christ.  In moments of fear, sadness and anxiety there is no need to fear because of memorized scriptures.

Every two weeks I will create a scripture memorization challenge printable. This week is my FAVORITE verse: John 14:27. Here is where to print the scripture memorization printable. Hang this up in a common area, and talk with your children about the verse and work on memorizing. With your children decide on goals for scripture memorization and rewards. Some families do ice cream, family game nights, movies etc... My family used the sticker method, but that was 20+ years ago. Eeek. I'm starting to feel old.

I know that family scripture study/memorization brings love, happiness and peace. So, have fun memorizing scriptures with your children! And enjoy the printable! :)

Unique Baby Names and Tips

Welcome to week two of Baby Names Thursday! Why - oh why is naming a baby so hard? Hopefully after this article you will have new methods for naming your little one. Read below for five tips to help name your baby and this week's featured "Unique Baby Boy Names."

Baby Naming Tips

1. Names Party Galore

During one of my showers everyone was asked to write down a couple names. Later I read the names out loud, while we laughed, oohed and awed.  If you live away from your family or friends there are other options than an in person party. Throw a naming party online through Facebook, Twitter, Google Hangouts, Skype and the list goes on... Invite friends to suggest names and a piece of advice for baby naming.

2. Cast your Vote

If you are hesitating to reveal your baby's name with family and friends then try online voting. Submit a list of names to www.thebump.com, and random visitors will vote which names they like most and least. Fair warning sometimes people aren't always nice when commenting if they like your names.

3. Ancestor Search

Family history work provides a sense of identity. Knowing where you came from, whether good or bad helps mold the future. I suggest starting with www.ancestory.com. Finding stories about those you gave you life will most definitely bring baby name ideas. Your child will have a lovely name with a tender meaning. One of my sisters has a family name with a beautiful story of faith and trials. Maybe I'll share another Thursday.

4. Bad Connotations

Conduct research on your top names. For example: Judas ... after biblical study you will learn that name is associated with Judas who betrayed Jesus. Eek. Talk with your partner and discuss the connotations. Is the connotation really that bad?

5. Sibling Names

Will the names fit with the older sibling(s)?  For example: Victoria, Henry, William and Ryder. Ryder doesn't match the "traditional" bunch, but does that matter? Are you going with all unique names or a combination of traditional and trendy? Many parents also will suggest not to name your children similar names. For example: Allie and Allison. What if Allison wanted to also go by Allie. Do you see where this might become challenging?

Hope these tips help with your baby naming adventure. Read below for this weeks featured "Unique Baby Boy Names." Do you know anyone with these names? I only know one person named Benson. Have fun looking at the names :)

Train Table Activity

Hello to all of the followers of Before the Clock Strikes Midnight! I'm happy to be guest posting on Tiffany's blog today. I'm Julie and I blog at Home Is Where The Heart Is. Each day of the week I blog about a different category. On Wednesdays, I blog about anything about children and parenting.

Whenever my husband and I get out of the house with our two girls, Katie and Sophia, we love going to Barnes & Noble. They love going there for two reasons: treat (cupcake or cookie) and the train table in the children's area. Do your kids love playing at the train table at B&N?
We got a train table for our own house when Katie was little from her Grandma and Grandpa. The train table is about half the size of the table at Barnes & Noble. The size is perfect for our girls' room. The train table is placed in the middle of their room.

My girls love playing with this train table. This is what the table looks like when no one as touched it. Katie loves to pull the trains across the tracks and loves to play with the cars on the roads. Sophia especially loves to take the tracks apart. Katie is then concerned that I have to 'fix the trains.' I couldn't count how many times I've put this train track back together and stage all the trains and cars.

We slowly add new pieces to this train table. All the pieces are mostly generic trains and cars. The pieces that aren't generic are the Thomas train, Chuggington train, and Air Force One airplane. The blue bridge was added to the original set. The red, yellow, and green train set is from Ikea. Some of the other places we find new pieces are at the Dollar Store and Target.

What do you think of the train table in my girls' room? If your kids love the train table at Barnes & Noble, they'd love this table.
Come visit me at my blog at Home Is Where The Heart Is. I'd love to hear from you and get to know you!

Thanks for reading. I'm so glad Julie was able to stop on over today! If you loved this post check out her adorable post on her yellow desk. Julie has great ideas for decor!

Unique Baby Girl Names

Naming a baby is difficult for some. You may love a certain name that your partner might seriously dislike. You are not alone in this situation! While pregnant my hubby and I would text names back and forth. Most of the texts would end with "I love you...but NO we cannot name our daughter that." I never knew deciding on a name would ever pose such a challenge. With so many pretty names, my husband and I took almost a week after our baby was born to decide. Luckily, the day we left the hospital we came to a sweet conclusion. Ah! What a relief it was to finally have her name set in stone.

Recently, after talking with many pregnant women I realized I wasn't alone in the search of the "perfect" name. Every couple is looking for a  "uniquely perfect" baby name. After looking through names (not because I'm pregnant) I discovered so many fun and clever names. Every Thursday come check my blog for "Baby Names Thursday." The list will include names used in the United States that are not ranked in the top 1000 (according to the Social Security Administration). I will also include tips and tricks to help with the naming process. If you have any tips on choosing a name please share and help others :)

Remember everyone is different with names they like and dislike. Even though I'm posting a wide variety of names, doesn't mean I love every single one ;) The list is simply for inspiration. I will also use names from all backgrounds to help you track down the perfectly unique name for your baby.

Top 10 Tips for Avoiding Stress on your Baby's Blessing/Christening Day

Baby Christening Tips

My sweet daughter was dressed all in white. Her adorable smile filled my heart with unspeakable happiness. The blessing day ran wonderfully. From prepping in the morning, diaper changes, outfit changes, feedings, the actual blessing and the dinner, I still cannot believe what a great day we had.

Recently, I started questioning what made the day run so smoothly. I'm hoping my future children will have blessing days that run peacefully like my first baby. The list below are the best steps to take when preparing and what to do on your baby's blessing/christening day.

1. Diaper Changing Time On The Big Day

This may seem obvious, but on this important day other important details will cross your mind. Do yourself a favor and avoid an explosion! (I've seen that happen...). The closer you can get to the blessing, THE BETTER.

2. When to Feed Your Baby

Feed your baby close to the blessing. Again this may seem obvious, but many babies cry during the blessing out of hunger or a wet/poopy diaper. Scheduling your baby's feedings around the blessing (kind of a hassle to change a routine, but it's worth it) will make your role much easier. When in doubt carry a bottle of milk that is ready to go.

3.  Pacifier...Pacifier

If your baby starts crying the pacifier is an easy fix! You can find cute baby pacifiers for blessing days on Etsy and DIY Binkie projects on Pinterest.  Don't forget a pacifier!

4. Dressing Your Baby

To avoid spit-up and diaper explosions make sure to change your baby into their blessing outfit after the last feeding before the blessing. This tip saved my sanity at my daughters blessing.

5. Add Love & Creativity

On a trip to my parents house my Mother pulled all of my baby possessions she had kept, including my blessing dress. I was amazed that she had kept the delicate white dress for all those years. Not only did she have the dress, but she also had my tiny ruffled white shoes (Aren't newborn clothing the cutest?!).  Using the treasured blessing dress I was able to add love and creativity into my daughters big day. You don't have to use this method, but here are other ideas for your baby's big day...

  •  Make a bow/flower headband.
  • Have a piece of your wedding dress sewn onto your baby's outfit. (I used my wedding lace to make a baby bow.)
  • Crochet baby shoes, blanket or hat.
  • Sew a baby blanket for his/her christening/blessing day.
  • Make a baby bow tie using a white tie from your husband to add a personal touch.
  • Be creative!

6. Ask For Help

You may feel like  everything under control, but don't overwork yourself. Call friends and family members to help with the lunch/dinner celebration after. Taking care of a newborn is tedious work that will leave you tired, busy and hungry. Don't overwork yourself! Family and friends love to help! The less things to do the better you will feel during the blessing. My in-laws are AWESOME! They planned and made the meal, while I was frantically nervous trying to take care of the baby.  My side of the family also brought food to the big day too. Without both sides of the family, I would have been a nervous wreck. Seriously, what wonderful people! Love them!

7. Have Someone Take Pictures

Have a family or friend member be the designated photographer (no they don't have to be professional). This takes the stress off you and the hubs.  Enjoy the day!

8. Bring Pen and Paper

Have friends write down bits and pieces they remember from the blessing/christening.

9. Bring in Seasonal Clothing

Don't forget even though you are inside babies are much smaller and can become colder quite easily. In summer bring a light blanket, in fall, winter and spring bring a cardigan. Prevent your baby from being cold to help them enjoy the big day.

10. Spiritual Reflection

It doesn't matter whether you write your emotions in a journal or on a blog. What does matter is capturing those precious memories. What a joyous day! On my daughter's blessing day, my heart melted in the warmth of God's Love.

Take thirty minutes to reflect, write, pray and thank God for your beautiful baby. Your son/daughter will thank you for taking the time to write down bits an pieces of the day.

Best wishes on your Baby's Blessing/Christening Day!
